How to Join an Online Community

There are two types of communities EMDRIA members may join on their own:

  • Special Interest Groups (SIGs) - These communities cover a special interest relating to EMDR. Each has a SIG Chair (or sometimes Co-Chairs) who leads the group and moderates the online community. SIGs may have activities outside of online discussions such as conference calls or meeting at the EMDRIA Annual Conference.
  • Topic Forums - These communities cover a topic relating to EMDR or mental health. There isn't a SIG Chair, but there may or may not be a moderator. The moderator's role is to participate in discussions and start new threads in order to facilitate growth of the forum. Topic Forums do not have activities outside of the online discussion; however, Topic Forums may be transitioned into a SIG if it reaches 100 members and has at least 50 discussions and someone is interested in starting a SIG and becoming the SIG Chair.

Requirements to Join

All EMDRIA members are eligible to join Special Interest Group and Topic Forum communities, but they 1) must be a current member and 2) must sign in to their member account in order to access them.

Where to Join

Joining a community takes place within the EMDRIA Online Community. Even though you may see "join" links or buttons on the EMDRIA website, they will always take you to the online community. For example, the SIG Home page.

How to Join

  • You will always join a community either from the community type page (e.g. that lists all of the SIGs or all of the Topic Forums) or from the specific community's home page. However, there are several ways to get there. You may click a link in an email, click on the Join button (see example below) from the SIG Home page on the EMDRIA website, or navigate to a community from within the EMDRIA Online Community by using the top menu (e.g. going to Communities, Special Interest Groups, and then clicking on the SIG name.)

  • If you are not already signed in, you will be prompted to do so before you can access any online community. Please note, if you've never signed in on the EMDRIA Online Community before, you'll see the Code of Conduct page. You'll need to agree to the terms of usage before you can continue. This only has to be done once. The next time you sign in, you won't see it.
  • If you're on the community type page, you can join by clicking the "Join" button above the "Discussions", "Libraries", and "Members" tab next to the community name and description. See example below:

  • If you're on the specific community's home page, you can join by clicking the "Join Community" button below the grey bar with the community name. See example below:

  • Whether you click the "Join" or "Join Community" button, you'll get a pop-up window displaying your the name of the community, your email address, and radio buttons for you to choose how often you want to receive notifications. See example below:
  • Once you've made your selection, click the "Yes the Join Community" button (see example below) and you're done.
