EMDR therapy has become invaluable for psychotherapists of all major orientations, including psychoanalytic, psychodynamic, cognitive/behavioral, and experiential/gestalt.  It is a psychotherapy approach which is readily integrated into one’s clinical practice and can be learned in a modest period of time.

This two-weekend intensive experiential training will introduce participants to the safe and efficient use of the EMDR approach with a wide range of patients and situations.  This training program is approved by the EMDR International Association and meets the basic training didactic and practice requirement towards EMDRIA certification.  The instructor, Daniel Merlis, has 40 years of clinical/traumatology experience and has taught and practiced EMDR therapy for 20 years.

We have been training and providing consultation and supervision to clinicians using EMDR therapy for many years and have developed a training format which we believe will optimally prepare clinicians for using EMDR therapy in most clinical practice settings.  Our training is a two-weekend program extended over a period of two months.  Included during the two-weekend training are four of the EMDRIA-required ten hours of case consultation.  This is designed to help clinicians begin to use EMDR therapy with their clients and to address technical difficulties which commonly arise at this stage in the learning process.  We also offer an optional package of group phone consultations to our trainees for the additional 6 hours of EMDR case consultation required by EMDRIA before issuance of the basic training certificate.  These monthly calls are held following the two weekends of training.

This is an experiential training.  Participants will be using EMDR therapy with each other to reprocess memories of disturbing life experiences in order to gain familiarity with how clients experience EMDR processing effects as well as to acquire and develop the necessary practitioner skills before beginning work with actual clients.  The training groups are limited in size to 10 participants thus allowing a  more supportive, comfortable, private, and personalized learning environment.  Trainees will be expected to read and study EMDR literature before and during the training and will begin to implement specialized history-taking and preparation procedures with clients between the two training sessions.  All of this is designed to prepare clinicians for the effective, safe, and confident use of EMDR therapy in their clinical practices.
