APA PTSD Treatment Guidelines

Our members have almost certainly heard the controversy surrounding the release last Fall of the American Psychological Association’s (APA) PTSD Treatment Guidelines. Over the years, treatment guidelines have been viewed with some concern by practitioners that they might be used by insurers to narrow reimbursements or limit treatment alternatives in ways that do not best serve those who need care. Within APA, and those concerns have been expressed throughout the membership, as well as more broadly within the mental health community. There have been concerns about the fact that the committee members themselves were not balanced in their theoretical orientation. Some have raised questions as to whether committee members were vetted for potential conflicts of interest (for example, whether some have economic or employment ties to insurance companies). Further, concerns have been raised about methodology for the development of these guidelines, and the level and types of studies that were used to demonstrate effectiveness.

For EMDRIA, we have concerns, because it seems clear that, despite a solid body of evidence, EMDR is being down-listed—despite being recognized as an empirically supported treatment by the American Psychiatric Association, the World Health Organization, the US Department of Veterans Affairs and Department of Defense, and many other international mental health agencies. The question is: what can we do about it, as an organization, and as mental health professionals.

There are two potential paths of action. One is to sign on to a petition that also provides more background information. That petition, which is asking that the APA Council of Representatives take up this issue, can be found here.

For our members who are psychologists, and particularly who are members of APA, we encourage you to join colleagues who are members of APA by signing a letter that speaks directly to concerns regarding EMDR. The plan is to publish this letter in the APA Division 56 Newsletter. Please review the letter, and consider joining as a co-signer. The link is here.

Take action now! It could make an impact for years to come.
