Diagnosis and Differential Diagnosis of Dissociative Disorders and other Trauma-related Disorders: Getting it Right

Approved for 13 EMDRIA Credits

Dissociative disorders are not easy to diagnose for many reasons: clinicians’ incorrect biases and lack of education; controversies in definitions and classifications between DSM-5 and ICD-10/11; overlap with other disorders such as complex PTSD and cluster B personality disorders; difficult differential diagnosis with psychosis and bipolar disorder; unclear or misleading definitions of dissociation; and the polarized debate about the existence of DID as a reliable and valid diagnosis. Clients often present with a myriad of symptoms while hiding their dissociative symptoms. If an existing dissociative disorder is not recognized, clients can spend years in the mental health system with other diagnoses without their core problem addressed. And, clinicians can cause significant destabilization if they treat traumatic memories without first recognizing and treating the dissociative pathology. The first day will provide an overview of dissociative disorders and other trauma-related disorders such as complex PTSD and somatoform dissociation. The clinical phenomenology of the DSM-5 and ICD-10/11 will be discussed as well as screening instruments and diagnostic interviews. The second day will focus on differential diagnosis, imitations of dissociative disorders and false positive diagnosis. Case examples and video clips will be used throughout to illustrate these complex symptoms and concepts.
