Integrating Structural Dissociation Theory & the Polyvagal Theory into EMDR Psychotherapy and a Phase-Oriented Treatment of Complex Developmental Trauma Disorders

Approved for 6.5 EMDRIA Credits

EMDR Psychotherapy is based on the Adaptive Information Processing Model (AIP) which states current symptoms result from disturbing experiences that have not been adequately processed and are stored in state-specific, dysfunctional form. In cases of complex developmental trauma, integrating both Structural Dissociation Theory and the Polyvagal Theory with EMDR Psychotherapy's AIP Model helps clinicians in their work to return clients to mental health. The morning lecture will focus on integrating AIP with Structural Dissociation Theory and will teach the phase-oriented approach for treating dissociative disorders. The afternoon lecture will teach the Polyvagal Theory and how it integrates into EMDR Psychotherapy. Dr. Klensmeden's research protocol for Polyvagal stabilization techniques within a safe therapeutic relationship will be taught and the techniques will be practiced in practicum format.
