EMDR Therapy for Borderline Personality Disorder

Approved for 7 EMDRIA Credit

Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) presents great challenges for clinicians. Patients with this diagnosis are known for being impulsive, reactive and highly sensitive, and displaying high-risk behaviors, including suicide attempts. BPD patients can generate strong counter-transference issues in clinicians, and EMDR can mobilize strong feelings in patients. Therefore, identifying phobias and defensive responses in both patients and therapist can be crucial in selecting and applying treatment strategies in EMDR therapy with BPD patients. This one-day training for EMDR therapists, designed to help integrate BPD pathology and the Adaptive Information Processing model, will highlight the importance of learning to identify the role of defenses along the eight phases of EMDR therapy and how to address issues, and other topics.
